Back to Who's Who Index

Leslie H. Nicoll, PhD, MBA, RN, BC
Computers, Informatics, Nursing and JHPN

Editor-in-chief, CIN: Computers, Informatics, Nursing (since 1995)
Editor-in-chief, JHPN: Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing (since 2001)

Years as Editor: Since 1994

Years in INANE: Since 1994

Other Position: Principal & Owner, Maine Desk, LLC, Portland, Maine (Proud sponsor of INANE badge holders, 2004, 2005)

Accomplishment: I was the first editor (now Editor Emeritus) of Perspectives on Nursing Theory. I asked Rosemary Ellis to write the Foreword, but she was skeptical and wanted to read the manuscript before she committed. I will never forget the day when she put her hand on the stack of 2500 pages and said, "This is a wonderful book!"

Best: I love helping first-time authors work through the process of writing for publication and seeing their name in print. I find that very satisfying. I even had a thank you note signed, "Love, Mary".

Worst: I hate writing rejection letters, especially when the author decides to fight about the decision. Some of them bordered on a personal attack. It is very hurtful.

Amusing: An author, whose manuscript had been accepted pending revision, sent the manuscript back with complete formatting (fonts, drop caps, columns, table and figure legends, etc…) I had not asked her to do this. This, of course, had to be undone for production. Sigh...

3 words: Not sure — I haven’t asked. Perhaps enthusiastic, funny, genuine. Maybe Maine hippie.

Strangest request: A few authors ask when they will be paid. One author wanted to pay me!

If not editor?: Travel writer or movie critic

Relax?: Surfing the Internet. I love to read newspaper articles worldwide and join online forums. I have a gang of non-nurse Internet buddies. I also like movies and spending time with my husband and children, and dining out. I enjoy trying new wines and I like to cook.
