WHO'S WHO OF NURSING EDITORS

Back to Who's Who Index

Kathleen "Kitty" Buckwalter, RN, PhD, FAAN
Journal of Gerontological Nursing

Editor, Journal of Gerontological Nursing

Prior Editor Position: Review Panel, JGN

Years as Editor: Since 1997

Other position: Professor, University of Iowa, College of Nursing
Director, Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence

Accomplishment: Mentoring novice contributors

Best: Setting new directions for the field and promoting evidence-based practice

Worst: Responding to angry/upset colleagues because their articles have either been rejected or are "in press" too long.

Amusing: I had a detached retina several years ago with a scleral buckle repair. Maybe a week after the surgery, I was in a meeting in Singapore and had some problems post op, so I went to an eye clinic in a foreign hospital to get a check-up under the bandages. I had a ton of manuscripts that were overdue because of my eye problems, so I was in the waiting room of the eye clinic trying to finish up overdue editing and the staff was screaming at me to stop working (in a mixture of Chinese, English, Indian and Malaysian languages) or I would go blind!

3 words: Determined, hard working, loyal

Strangest request: To serve on the review panel for a "rival" journal.

If not editor?: Retire

Relax?: Work jigsaw, crossword and sudoku puzzles and play the violin.
