I edited two issues of Nursing Clinics of North America Best: There are several best things—working with a wide variety of authors, worldwide, helping them to develop their message and get published, and working with strong editorial boards and loyal reviewers. Worst: The threat of legal intrusion, from manufacturing companies regarding their products and from publishing unflattering reports of "lessons learned" in healthcare. Also, geopolitical intrusion when international authors are involved. Amusing: A while ago, page proofs were faxed to my home office. There was a case report about external male genitalia, with graphic photos. A distracted assistant dialed my area code, but the publisher’s number. The mistake was discovered when I received a pensive phone call from a local trucking company, asking if I was expecting a certain fax. 3 words: We should ask them Strangest request: An annoyed author called to ask for a copy of the journal with her article. We had not published it, and, in fact, it needed extensive revision. She insisted a colleague had sent it, along with her photo. She later admitted she had sent it to several journals simultaneously. If not editor?: I am not currently editing a journal, but do enjoy working with graduate students and not having deadlines. Relax?: Reading, traveling, spending time with family and friends. |
