A section editor and I tried to work out what an author meant by saying the interviewee had "survived the ding". We tracked down the author and realized that half a sentence was missing. But the "ding" is a part of our office parlance. 3 words: Busy, focused, dogged Strangest request: "Can you do my research for me, please?" (frequent request, although not phrased exactly like this).
