WHO'S WHO OF NURSING EDITORS
Janice Denehy, RN, PhD Executive Editor, The Journal of School Nursing, From 2001 Years as Editor: Since 1998 Years in INANE: Since 2002 Other Position: Associate Professor Emeritus, The University of Iowa College of Nursing, Iowa City, IA Accomplishment: Seeing readers of a practice-oriented journal begin to understand the importance of research to their practice (it has been a long road), and editing a journal that is advancing the specialty of school nursing. Best: Hearing from novice authors who are so excited to see their work in print after many revisions and attention to detail needed to meet the standards for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Worst: Coming up with ideas for thought-provoking editorials and meeting deadlines. Amusing: A number of years ago in the era of the uni bomber, I received a large tattered box in the mail. After much consternation by my secretary, we finally decided to open it. The box contained five copies of a doctoral dissertation sent to the journal for review. When I contacted the author to explain that she would need to condense the information into a manuscript according to the guidelines for authors. Her response was, "You’re the editor — I thought that was your job!" (I never heard from her again) 3 words: Organized, patient, encouraging Strangest request: After three rejections, an author offered me second authorship if I would rewrite the manuscript according to my specifications. If not editor?: When I retire I will have more time to pursue my interests in art and music. Relax?: Travel, visit with family, and play tennis. |
